Stealing!!:P " Book Thief" Part 3 Question
“Stealing was one of the joys of childhood for Liesel and Rudy.” They were many things that brought Rudy and Liesel together, but it was the stealing that cemented their friendship completely.” Book Thief page 148. As you can see stealing for Rudy and Liesel was not a big deal. They used stealing to benefit themselves. It was the only solution. For example if they were hungry the solution was to steal. If Liesel wanted books one solution was to steal. They didn’t saw stealing as a bad thing to do. The problem is that as you can see Liesel’s life has been very complicated. Her brother died and her mother left her with the foster parents. She now lives in Himmel Street, were they live in a little house, have barely enough money for education and to buy things, and barely have enough food to eat. Liesel and Rudy don’t live a life like us. We receive a good education and thank God we have food to eat. Liesel and Rudy are not receiving a good education at all, so they don’t really know the meaning of stealing. They see stealing like a one option to survive. Rosa and Hand Hubermann work hard and they try their best to find work, earn money, but it seems to be difficult to them. They are doing the best to maintain Liesel. They barely have food to eat and the one solution is for example exchanging things….but what can they exchange of they don’t have so many things? Maybe Han Hubermann’s tobacco, but maybe not everyone will exchange something for tobacco. And Hans Hubermann loves tobacco; he already did his effort to buy 2 books to Liesel, exchanging 8 cigarettes per book. Life has no been very easy for them. I agree that stealing is very bad and should NEVER be done, but it is not Liesel and Rudy’s fault for not having a good education or not having food. Liesel and Rudy did everything to survive. Yes, they are many solutions instead of stealing, but they don’t receive a good education so how are they going to know that stealing is WRONG. It is true that, poor farmer that they stole all of the apples of his tree and that he maybe took a long time and great effort to plant the tree. Maybe this food was to feed their children. But Liesel and Rudy didn’t thought about that, they just wanted to save their lives. When you are hungry and about to die you even don’t think about many options. You do the first thing it comes to your mind. Also if you start thinking, it is better to save someone’s life, and be happy because you were a hero. Instead of knowing that you were unwilling to give and you didn’t save some ones life. As you can remember when Liesel and Rudy stole the apples, each apple was disposed of on the riverbank were she learned to swim. They were not used to such luxury, they knew it was likely they were going to get sick. But they were so hungry that they ate them. For hunger they did stealing. Everybody makes mistakes, and they wished that in their life they could be someone that could give them a good education and tell them what is WRONG and RIGHT.

but don't you thank that if they didn't know it was "wrong" to steal then they wouldn't run away and hide? I agree that stealing is wrong, and i wouldn't do that EVER, but i've never been in Leisel's position, and maybe i would do the same if i was VERY hungry.
I enjoyed your entry and thoughts on the topic. nice use of a quote to start your blog. You describe all the reasoning and and you almost sound like you are giving Rudy and Liesel some leniency but you don't seem to commit to one side or the other. Also a good comment by Ana, which you may want to consider.
annie i agree with you.. they doo steal for fun and that is wrong! but ana's right.. if you were in liesels position stealing is one of the only solutions. But alsoo ana.. we are very educated people.. and in our school people still steal, when they knwo its wrong.
